After months of studying and building my CFI binder as an initial CFI applicant, I quickly realized what I didn’t know and what should and shouldn’t go into a good lesson plan. It was a plan, build, teach, change lesson plan, and re-teach again with all applicable subject matter. Knowing the correct references certainly helped in building my lesson plans, but it was a very tedious process as any CFI will tell you. When I started studying for my CFII it had been awhile since my initial Instrument rating training and I wanted to be sure I was capturing the correct information to include in my LPs. I had heard of several other instructors using the Pilotnick material and decided to check it out. I am glad I did! Each subject area covers the required material as outlined in the applicable PTS and includes the pictures from the applicable references to enhance the training value. Unfortunately you aren’t able to change any of the material in the binder but its for obvious reasons. Someone put in a great deal of work to make this! I’ve found that using my iPad and iBooks I am able to highlight material and add a note which I include a link to an online video to help the student understand the material. Another great feature of the binder and Pilotnick is the ability to submit support tickets online to request material additions, corrections, or changes to future revisions. The support staff is quick to respond as well and in my book that is good customer service! I plan on purchasing the CFI Binder as well solely based on my experience with the CFII Binder. As with the initial CFI binder, the CFII binder is leaps and bounds above all others I looked at. The quality of the information and graphics make it much more complete and user-friendly and make it well worth the extra cost. It would be nice, however, for those of us going for all the ratings (CFI, CFII, MEI) if there were some sort of combined product that limits the overlaps and at a reduced fee (ie, there’s no need for FOI, Aeromedical, etc sections again if you’re getting more than one of these binders). I’m working on my MEI now, and I can’t wait for that binder to be finished (I am a bit disappointed that the anticipated release date keeps getting pushed further and further back).
